Getting Around Taiwan Major Cities

This article is to talk about how to travel between Taiwan major cities.

 

Getting to the nearby city

If you are trying to get from your current city to the city next to you, you can use below ways to get there:

  • Train
    • Timetable: http://twtraffic.tra.gov.tw/twrail/EN_QuickSearch.aspx
    • Buy Ticket:
      • Book online: Not suggest to book ticket online because the booking page is super difficult to use, and don’t worry ticket will sold out, most of the train allow you to buy a stand-room-only ticket, so the ticket is like unlimited for most of the train. Expect Taroko Express, Puyuma Express two kinds of express train which goes to Eastern Taiwan don’t sell stand-room-only ticket, which makes these two express very hard to get a ticket.
      • Convenience Store: The 4 largest convenience stores(711, FamilyMart, Hi-Life, OK) all provide KOISK machine can buy ticket 24/7. If you don’t know how to buy ticket on the machine, you can always ask the store worker for help.
      • Every train station.

Tips: You can easily use Google Maps Direction to know which way is faster and which lane or station should you take on/off.

 

Getting to the longer distance city

For example you are at Taipei which is at the northern Taiwan, and you are going to Kaohsiung which is at the southern of Taiwan, than you can travel by these ways

  • Long-Distance Bus (Taiwanese usually call it Freeway Bus)

    • Most of the long-distance bus can’t be find in Google Maps or Apple Maps.
    • Most of the bus companies in Taiwan don’t provide English website, you can use below line to search for route and fares.

    • Local people usually take below four bus companies to travel between large cities like Taipei, Taichung, Tainan, Kaohsiung.
      • Kuo-Kuang Bus: Usually cheapest, has most stations than others.
      • UBus: Has more runs a day than other buses, also offer many routes and this is the 2nd cheap bus service.
      • Ho-Hsin eBus: Comfortable, has 2-raw seats bus which has very comfortable seat can sleep.
      • Aloha Bus: Comfortable, has direct bus to Kaohsiung.
    • Some Bus company are operate 24/7, even mid-night still have bus can take (usually very safe at night in Taiwan).
    • If you want to buy ticket, you can ask your hotel for more information first, and then visit the bus station(don’t go to bus stop, no one will sell ticket there) or go to convenience store KOISK machine to buy it.

  • Train (Taiwan Railways)

    • If you’re going to use train to travel for a long distance, better choose “Express” for faster speed train.
    • If you plan to travel to eastern Taiwan cities Hualien and Taitung(or Taidong), train is the only public transportation to get there.
